"The world is small. Always leave an interview with a good impression. Acquaintances met at interviews and through recruiting come back into your professional life later."
Take Aways
- Prepare – have solid rationale for why your asking for the things you're asking for
- "I want an extra week of vacation" . why? "because I would like to take this time to be with my children", "work on my hobbies," etc.
- Know your limits and priorities – part of being a good negotiator is knowing what the other party wants. Too often though, we don't take the time to focus on what we want and assess our true limits and priorities. Realize that you do have constraints.
- Focus on the end goal – it's not all about the money. Consider opportunity, personal development, working environment, etc. What is your ideal outcome?
- Don't negotiate unless you're read to say "yes. if." – be flexible and creative – put your need on the table, but realize that compromise does not equal ideal outcome. Be ready to say no, but be sincere when you say yes.
- Always take the opportunity to further impress – Listening is more important than talking, Listen for the outcome and know what is important to other party
- Have a Win-Win Attitude – Be gracious and engaging
- When NOT to negotiate
- Don't negotiate salary during the interview – sell yourself first, get the offer, then negotiate.
- Negotiating Your Salary
- Realize that there are constraints:
- Companies have rate ranges for each level
- Companies are willing to provide sign on bonuses in lieu of an increased salary
- What are you walking away from? - What is your current salary? Be realistic when negotiating your salary. If you're currently making $50K, mostly likely you're not going to jump to $100K by switching jobs.
- What's in it for them?
- How to make it a WIN-WIN?
- Be up front, honest, & prepared
- "Job search is like dating. Acceptance is like marriage."
