Evening MBA Program Module 1A Courses
- G502 Managerial Economics, Part 1 (1.5 cr.)
- A course that teaches managers how to balance benefits and costs and efficiently allocate resources across tasks and over time. The curriculum offers foundational knowledge of market structure, outlines ways to interpret the impact on prices of enhanced competition and industry innovation, expands application of statistical knowledge, and defines rules-of-thumb for business management that expand profitability. Specific topics covered include regression analysis and decisions under uncertainty, present value and opportunity costs, supply and demand, cost structure and economies of scale, price elasticity and consumer valuation, and impacts from taxation and price controls. Continued in Module 1B with Part 2, G511 Microeconomics for Managers.
- A524 - Managing Accounting Information for Decision-Making (3 cr.)
- P: A501 or equivalent. Provides a user-oriented understanding of how accounting information should be managed to ensure its availability on a timely and relevant basis for decision- making. Focus is on cost-benefit analysis for evaluating potential value-added results from planning, organizing and controlling a firm's accounting information.
- J501 Developing Strategic Capabilities (1.5 cr.)
- This course offers an introduction to tools for strategic management. Because it comes at the beginning of the MBA Program, it provides an introductory view of the complexities involved in determining long-term strategies. Rather than assessing the firm's environment in terms of broadly defined opportunities and threats, we will examine the dynamics of the competitive environment, how both the pace and the direction of industry change are influenced by the resources, capabilities, and competitive interactions of rival firms.
- X511 Intensive Seminar: Foodcorp Simulation (1.5 cr.)
- A required week-end business simulation to be held November 8 & 9. More details to follow.
Course Materials
Textbooks, case packets, and other course materials can be purchased at the Barnes and Noble at the IUPUI Bookstore on the 1st floor of the Campus Center ("CE" on the map at University Boulevard and Michigan St.). Materials can be found in the "Business" section of the bookstore and are shelved by course and class number. Another bookstore on 10th Street (close to Starbucks) called Indy's College Bookstore also shelves MBA books.
Textbooks for the August 2008 semester should be on the shelves approximately two weeks prior to the beginning of the semester. G502 books and course pack may not be available until later in the semester since the course doesn't start until late October. You may also order them directly from the bookstore online. The bookstore is usually open Monday–Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You may want to check their website for special holiday hours.

Also, you must be able to run a word processor, spreadsheet, and communications software as well as any additional statistical or database software required during the program. As technology changes, please be prepared to update your computer system.
There may be sessions that require you to bring a notebook computer to class and you should be able to do so. Therefore, you need to have access to a notebook computer, whether you purchase or borrow one, that you can bring to class when assigned to do so by the faculty.
We recommend the following minimum specification:
- Processor: 1 GHz or higher Intel or AMD
- Memory (RAM): 1 GB
- Hard Drive: 80 GB
- Video Card: Direct X compatible with 32 MB RAM
- DVD Drive
- Removable Storage: USB Flash or floppy drive
- Operating System: Windows XP
Storage requirements for your hard drive and RAM will be determined by your applications software. We generally recommend that you have at least 20 Gigabytes available for storage after installing the operating system and applications. The specifications listed previously are the minimum required for the MBA program. If you are buying a new machine, your personal and/or professional needs may exceed the previous specifications. For more information and special deals for IU students, please refer to the IU Computer Guide.
IUware CD's are available at the Barnes & Noble at IUPUI Bookstore with your student ID card or you can download them directly from IUWare. The IUware CD is the most efficient way for Indiana University students, faculty, and staff to get essential Web-browsing, communications, and anti-virus software on their personal computers. Enrolled students may also purchase CDs or download the latest versions of Microsoft Office and Microsoft XP/Vista at the bookstore's website.
