Curriculum
The curriculum's flexibility allows it to serve two diverse groups of students; those that have little or no background in accounting as well as those who are currently in practice and desire to advance or change the direction of their careers.
The curriculum permits students to pursue a general program of study in accounting or a specialization in a particular area such as auditing and financial reporting, taxation, information systems or management advisory services and consulting. Students wanting to tailor a program to meet their specific interests (e.g., an industry specialization) have the capability to do so and can draw upon the vast offerings available from Indiana's most comprehensive university. While most courses will be taken in the Kelley School of Business at Indianapolis, students may also find themselves taking courses in the IU School of Law, the IU School of Philanthropy, or Purdue's School of Engineering and Technology- all conveniently located on the campus of IUPUI near downtown Indianapolis. Students also have the ability to take courses on the Bloomington campus.
Students may apply to the MSA program with or without a bachelor's degree in business or accounting. Those entering the program with a bachelor's degree in business normally must complete 30 hours of course work to obtain the MSA with at least 15 hours of accounting. Those with backgrounds in other fields may be required to do additional work to develop expertise in the core areas of business. All students should have a working knowledge of basic computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets and Internet).
